Visit to the Vanished

2023

Last night I called you on a sham number in a time that never was

I said I’m at that restaurant that never existed on your street

Confidently I asked, like I used to, should I come up after?

That bright surprise in a voice that cannot answer

What luck to hear it anyway

Somewhere between vast deathlands and dreams

I got to see you again

Hold you again

Embrace your frail bones again

You looked younger somehow

The day was light out

You wore a blue-white checkered apron

woven of slightly mismatched synapses

All afternoon we whiled away in quiet mirth

Sensing no weight of borrowed time

You had never even been

resurrected
